Political The political system that the Ancien Regime of the French Monarchy has structured has done well in the past. The French Monarch ruled by ‘divine right’: a monarch was considered to be God’s appointed representative on earth. Once the existence and nature of God were questions, such a social and political system began to seem increasingly illogical. (Gorrara and Langford 2003, p.2) Under the Ancien Regime, French society was divided into three ‘estates’. The First Estate was the clergy (2%); the Second Estate (2%) was the nobility and the Third Estate (96%) by the Peasants and City Workers (Ingham 2003, p.56). This was used over 200 years ago, although Louis XVI just wants to keep old order in France instead of changing. Before the people of France thought the King has been God’s representative that God gave all the rights and power to govern the country. Historian argued that Louis XVI had good intentions for the kingdom but he was too young, inexperience, and politically weak to bring about the reforms that were desperately needed. Leadership was certainly lacking. Louis XVI was a well intentioned but weak individual, incapable of offering the firm resolve that the crisis of the late 1780s required. (Crook 1880, p.10)The advisors almost never give any good advises to Louis XVI but we could blame him for not doing the decision himself. He didn’t know how to rule the country but he could have learn how to. Louis XVI should stop maintaining tax free privileges for the First and Second estate. Church as an institution was not only very rich but also powerful (Hibert 1980, p.24). We also can’t blame him for ruling in an unfortunate time. The Feudal rights and due should be changed in order to the windmill or water needed to pay taxes. It was not fair for the people that didn’t inherit any land from their ancestors.
