In Portrait of a Lady, Madame Merie says a person is strongly represented by his/her belongings, while Isabel Archer believes that belongings don’t define who a person is.
To start off, my support of Madame Merie’s statement is based on my experience. A great part of my belongings is clothes. The clothing I wear represents my tastes and interest that I have. There are millions of clothing choices out there in the world, and out of all of them I choose a selected few. Why? Because it’s my tastes that takes a liking for them, and my tastes is based on who I am. For instance, when I go shopping, I buy extravagant items, such as my gold jacket, because it represents that I like making a statement. I want people to notice me and to know that I am not afraid to do as I please, even if its not what others are doing, because quite frankly, not many people go walking down a hallway with gold jackets on, especially in school, the place where people just want to fit in. It also shows that I have confidence, because I don’t mind attracting the attention of others, from which criticizing will arise. It highlights that I have the assurance to be able to handle criticism and pay no attention and to be who I am, without the need of others approval. Aside from my clothing articles, I am also defined by the electronics that I own, like my IPhone. It shows that I like technology, and that my social life is important to me. My liking for technology is showcased, by having a phone that is touch screen, has music player, a camera, games, and access to the Internet. I could have chosen a simple cell phone with no added unnecessary features, which is simply used for making calls, or chose to have no cell phone at all. However, since I have an intrigue for the latest technological advances, I chose to get the IPhone, that is one of the most advanced phones at the moment with all its assets that entertain me.
