The student's in today's classroom may be technologically more advanced than previous years, but the importance of reading has remained the same. It is important because we apply our reading skills every day. Reading in today's classroom is very important and there is a lot of emphasis placed on comprehension and reading level. I think reading is an important aspect of education because we use it every day all the time. When a child is falling behind in reading most other areas of instruction will also start to decline, because reading is a building block for all areas of the curriculum.

Phonemic awareness is often misinterpreted for phonics. The most important thing to understand is phonemic awareness and phonics are not the same. They are separate entities that have specific information relating to each topic. Research done on phonemic awareness concludes that, it is an important predictor in becoming a successful reader for the future. Phonemic awareness is identifying and manipulating the individual sounds in words. Simply defined, phonemic awareness is a specific skill for learning to read an alphabetically written language. A good indicator of a student’s understanding of phonemic awareness is possessing the ability to segment sounds in words. Generally, if a student can identify that the word rat has three separate sounds. There is an age group in which phonemic awareness is suggested to be most important. Usually, by the end of kindergarten, children should be able to demonstrate phonemic blending and segmentation and to make progress in using sounds to spell simple words. Phonemic awareness can be implemented as a systematic instruction in K-2 classes. Including early skills associated with phonemic awareness should be a priority for any school based program.
