ESSAY #3 ASSIGNMENT (100 POINTS)
By the time you finish reading through to the end of Chapter 11 in the textbook, you should have a solid sense of the tensions between “continuity and change” in the lives of 20th century American women through 1980. Thinking about the whole period of 1900 to 1980, what stayed the same and what changed for American women? Identify at least three continuities and at least three changes, and discuss their influence and significance in U.S. public life and popular culture. Explain your answer.
To do this assignment well please follow these instructions closely:
1) Identify at least three things which persisted in the general experience of U.S. women, and at least three things which developed in a new and different direction.
2) Which of the three continuities you’ve identified seems most influential in public life and popular culture?
3) Which of the three changes seems most significant?
Once you have identified the three continuities and the three changes you want to discuss, be sure to explain your choices’ influence and significance in a way that demonstrates you have done all of the assigned reading. Use brief quotes to illustrate this knowledge base. Parenthetical references of (TWE, page number) are sufficient. Remember not to just “drop” quotes into the essay, but integrate them into the flow of your own voice. Use framing language to do so.
Be analytical in discussing your thoughts -- as if, for example, you are addressing another student of American Women’s History who is equally knowledgeable about your shared reading. This audience, above all, wants to know why you selected the areas of emphasis you did. So explain explain explain!
Essays are to be four of five pages in length. I prefer Times New Roman 12 point font, and be sure to use standard margins (1”) and paragraph spacing (1.5 or double spaced). Essays do not have to be three-hole punched.
Due on the last day of class, Wednesday...
