Uncertainty has risen in times of need on the verdict of human welfare, medical treatment, pain management, and end of life termination. Recognizing that the use of medical marijuana will ease the pain and suffering of cancer patients. Pot, grass, weed, herbs, hash, dope, call it what you like but the debate on legalizing marijuana for medical purposes is not just a simple debate. The debate can be dated back as early as 1937, as stated in the Institute of Medicine (IOM); Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base, the “Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, was the first time the federal level regulated anyone producing, distributing, or using marijuana for medical purposes to register and pay a tax and which effectively prohibited non-medical use of the drug” (http://www.map.edu/html/marimed/). Although this was the first legislative ruling by the federal government, there were more to come in the future years over turning pervious rulings. For instance, outlined in the History of Marijuana as Medicine; “The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act was passed in 1970 by Congress. Which deletes the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, and places marijuana into Schedule I, meaning it has no medical value and has the highest potential for abuse” (www.medicalmarijuanaprocon.org/pop/history.htm). Not only did this Act stop the use of medical marijuana but it also halted the experimental research on the effects of medical marijuana. Less is actually known about the beneficial and therapeautic effects of marijuana since the government has refused to put their money towards this side of the research (http://www.medmjscience.org/Pages/history/consumerreports.html).
