Predictors of Abusive Supervision
Exposure to abusive supervision can be inevitable in workplaces. Tough and rude supervisors in any work environment can be always expected. It is not a new phenomenon in fact it has been one of the presumed situations that any employees would think about when starting a new job. The subordinate employees have the right to such presumptions due to the fact that abusive supervision can be experienced at any time in any work places. For new employees, it is not unusual to feel threatened by the thought of going through harsh and rude treatment by the supervisor. The abusive supervision could be influenced by the personality and leadership styles of the supervisors that could be driven by certain predictors. The study of Bennett Tepper, Sherry Moss, and Michelle Duffy (2011) established associations of supervisor perceptions of deep-level dissimilarity, relationship conflict, and subordinate performance as predictors of abusive supervision.
The situations discussed in the article exposed the common supervisory flaws in work environments. Good and fair supervision in workplaces is very critical to the psychological and emotional well-being of every employee. Efficient supervision could guide the subordinates to do the right way but the supervisors can anytime demonstrate abusive behavior when dealing with their subordinates. The maltreatment from the employer has been suggested as one of the reasons pushing the supervisors to be abusive (Tepper, Moss, & Duffy, 2011). The maltreatment of the employers can turn the supervisors rude and may breach the line of the human rights of the supervised employees.
