Introduction
In this assignment I will be describing how material things help to create winners and losers on Main Street, Ballyclare. I will be comparing this to what I have learned about City Road, Cardiff, and I will talk about any similarities and differences that I came across. Everybody uses material things whether they take notice or not. By winners & losers, I mean people that benefit from material things, and people who feel excluded because of them.
Examples
On Main Street, Ballyclare, examples of winners and losers are evident as there is a school on one of the busier roads and this causes a lot of car/pedestrian activity. As there are no traffic lights, a lollipop man has been put in place to stop the traffic so that school children can cross the road safely. He has a lollipop stick which shows that he is someone that can enforce social order. This creates winners as it helps school children cross the road safely, but could create losers as it causes traffic congestion, especially on busy mornings. This, although, helps shape society and enforces social order as people conform to this order to the best they can. City Road employs the same system, as it can get busy in the mornings. June, the lollipop lady ensures that the children can get across the road safely and she shows her distress when talking about a man that constantly disobeys social order. There is another example of restoring social order when she asks the driver to reverse off the crossing.
