The five main characters in the story include Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, George Wickham, and Lydia Bennet. The main Heroine in the book is Elizabeth Bennet. She is the second oldest of the Bennet daughters and is 20 Years old. She is intelligent, witty, lively, and often makes quick judgments. Jane Bennet is the oldest of the Bennet sisters. She falls for a man by the name of Charles Bingley. She is Elizabeth’s closest sister and is the reason Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy is the male protagonist in the novel. He is very wealthy and has a younger sister he looks after. He falls in love with Elizabeth Bennet in contrast to his harsh judgments he made of her before. George Wickham knows Mr. Darcy since childhood. He and Elizabeth soon grow an attachment to each other. He spreads bad rumors about Mr. Darcy and his crudeness, but eventually he is shown as the real wrongdoer. Mr. Wickham runs off with Lydia Bennet and eventually marries her. Lydia Bennet is the youngest of the Bennet sisters and is the most frivolous. She spends her days flirting with the men in the army stationed in her town. She runs away with Mr. Wickham and is shameless in the disgrace she caused her family.
The setting of the book is from 1797 to 1815. It is set in Longbourn, in rural England. This was as the age of reason begins. Austen had soldiers in the books because the boys were about to ship off for war to fight America, or Napoleon. If the solider would not have been there Lydia could not disgraced the family. In addition, this is a time where women were supposed to listen to men and that the said, and because of this we see Elizabeth’s independent personality stronger than we would have.
