Introduction

About 35,000 research articles, magazine articles, and books have been written about leadership. As a consequence, leadership has been defined in many ways. Several definitions of leadership are as follows:
Interpersonal influence, directed through communication toward goal attainment
An act that causes others to act or respond in a shared direction
The art of influencing people by persuasion or example to follow a line of action.
The principal dynamic force that motivates and coordinates the organisation in the accomplishment of its objectives
A willingness to take the blame.

Let us look at David Moffatt who is Telstra’s Group Managing Director, Consumer and Marketing, and prior to that he was Telstra’s chief financial officer. Earlier in his career, he had held leadership roles with Palmer Tube Mills, Citibank and Bain & Company.

His career has given him a unique insight into leadership and management. Moffatt believes the CEO role and other senior management roles have a lot in common in terms of fundamental leadership skills. They need to drive growth, be responsible for shaping and nurturing a company’s culture, ensure the company is focused on the customer; promote values, and serve as the public face of the organisation.

Leadership skills are still important: Moffatt is responsibe for the performance of thousands of people across various functions in the company. All of those people require leadership; a leader with strong people leadership skills. His staff want to be kept informed about where the organisation is going and what opportunities are available to be part of the process.
