Procter & Gamble (P&G) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of a wide array of products, including many household grocery items: antiperspirants, baby care, household cleaners, skin care, fabric care, food & beverages, laundry, etc. P&G is known as a dominant, aggressive developer and marketer of high-quality consumer goods. They have been in business for over 150 years. Early on, the Procter & Gamble growth strategy was isolated in three main areas: acquisitions, developing new product brands, and globalization.
In 1873, William Procter and James Gamble created Procter and Gamble. William Procter introduced himself to Cincinnati as a candle maker, while James Gamble apprenticed himself to a soap maker. They met by chance when they married sisters and fittingly they initiated a partnership of candle making and soap making. In 1862, Procter and Gamble profiled by making candles for the Union soldiers. By 1980 Procter and Gamble were producing over thirty types of soaps of one being Ivory Soap. With the creation of new plants, new and improved ideas were formed. The company had grown from a thousand dollar investment to over a couple hundred million in eighty four years after the formation of the successful partnership, Procter & Gamble was incorporated to gain financial capital for an expansion. The expansion carried with the creation of Tide. Not only did Procter & Gamble produce Ivory and Tide, the company also produced the first toothpaste (Crest) with the approval of a dentist.
The image of the Procter & Gamble Company’s is the number one product because it sells. As the maker of Ivory Soap, Tide detergent and Crest toothpaste the P&G Company is a household name.
