Introduction
Nursing is consistently designated as one of the most trusted professions. As a result, the
professional nurse carries a great deal of responsibility as he or she carries out their various
challenging roles. State boards of nursing protect the public by ensuring that both potential
nurses meet minimum standards in order to obtain their professional licenses and that currently
licensed nurses continue to meet minimal standards in order to maintain such licensure.
