Project Planning in Teams Barbara Gillard University of Phoenix Project Planning in Teams Introduction Businesses and scholastic organizations are always seeking a better way to tackle projects. Efficiency, expedience, and optimum use of resources are greatly desired. Teams are tools which only be successful in completing any project through careful planning. Team Development Ideally, a team will consist of an assortment of skills and talents which, when coordinated, will satisfy all the requirements of the final goal. Temme and Katzel (1995) discuss a series of characteristics which are vital in developing a successful team: goals and objectives, empowerment, trust, authentic participation, innovation, leadership, and to promote positive changes. These characteristics become through the different stages of the teams development. As the five stages in a team's development progress so does the planning and completion of the project. The stages, known as Tuckman's Five Stage Theory of Group Development, are forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2003.) The first stage, forming, represents the initial meeting and establishment of the team. At this point the team members are generally cooperative due to unfamiliarity with the other members and the unknown expectations of the group. At this stage the team lead will explain the project goal and open the discussion to the rest of the team for suggestions on how to proceed with the project. teams as disagreements arise. As the process of the project is developed, team members will recognize potential sacrifices and rather than give something up they will argue their concern.
