The word promptness is a variant of the word prompt. This word was derived from the Latin word promptus, meaning brought forth, at hand, ready or quick. The Webster college dictionary defines this term as quick to act or to do what is required. Other descriptions are ready, punctual and done or spoken without delay. Promptness is an important attribute to possess and practice in many different aspects of personal and professional life. Promptness is a skill that improves a person’s personal and professional life. Being prompt in ones dealings gives warrant to opportunity and advancement. Prompt action is an effective way to take control of a situation or incident. When a situation is not approached in a prompt manner it can escalate to a point harder control. This would make an unnecessarily larger incident that may require more resources than originally predicted.
There are many situations that require a prompt response. As related to the fire service, prompt response can be a determining factor of the degree of loss in life and property. A prompt response is warranted and expected from the fire service. There for all members have a responsibility to practice and apply this attribute in their daily lives. Being ready and punctual promotes a strong self image that is projected to other individuals. The same can be said about the opposite. Not doing so can develop a bad reputation or history. This would make it difficult to advance and make people reluctant to work with you, fearing failure or being slowed down.
Examples of displaying promptness in the fire service are an every day occurrence. Promptness is one of the defining characteristics of a firefighter.
