Proposition 8 provides that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California”, which forbids same-sex marriage, and is not fair. It is so wrong that people interpose their own beliefs on another person or deprive others of happiness. In other words, people should give equal treatment to same-sex couples as they would to anyone else, and place laws that maintain equality for everyone.
Firstly, people should not have any prejudices to homosexuals. “People are born equal”, that is what we all believe to be true, but how many of us can actually commit to it in our daily lives. As the essay stated, “Marriage Equality USA’s on-line survey found that over 40% of all respondents, the majority being LGBTI individuals, indicated they faced homophobia, hate speech, violence or threats resulting from California’s Prop 8 campaign”. It would appear that many same-sex couples were suffering in a negative consensus and adverse social environment at that time. But the positive side is that homosexuals and their backers won the fight at last.
Normally, one of the reasons people are against same-sex marriage is because of parenting issues; they think it will have a negative effect on kids and the kids will be derided in school or be subjected to inequitable treatment. But in fact, that is not true. Children can make jokes of others for any reason, such as having an unusual name, being obese, or some other reasons; we have all had that experience – laughing at someone or being laughed at. Same-sex couples’ kids are not necessarily bound to be gay or lesbian. They are families, too, and all a family needs is love and duty.
