Since our firm has been asked to propose a solution to MacEwan Universiy’s growing concerns about safety problems regarding the unreliability of the stairs, after applying careful attention to time required and feasible cost, we have come to a conclusion that suggests the idea of implementing escalators into every building. The escalators that my firm plans to implement are made from state of the art A1 grade stainless steel. The bulk order of steel will be manufactured by ArcelorMittal S.A. The manufacturing company will offer us lower rates due to the bulk offer proposed to them. The steel will be more ridged than most metals such as aluminum but at the same time it will be lighter in weight due to the unique manufacturing possesses used. The escalators use energy saving measures such as using motion sensing infrared technology and weight sensors implemented into the individual weights to detect when to start the escalator belt and when to stop. To address security concerns our research has shown that if we integrate pressure sensitive plates that force out foam when a significant change in pressure is detected. The foam is very durable and can prevent the injury from hitting the sharp edges. The foam can be compressed back into plates by the mechanism what originally inflates it. These escalators will minimize the probability of falls and also lessen the injuries by providing cushion between the person and the steps. The use of escalators might have some drawbacks such as passing the mandatory safety regulations as put in by the government and spending money to maintain the escalators. However these drawbacks are significantly outweighed by the advantages of having an escalator. The cost to implement this technology is estimated to be around twenty billion and it will take around ten to twelve weeks. Our engineering firm will also construct a plan to install a total of forty-three escalators in the city centre campus. We will also propose a maintenance...
