My role as a caretaker is one that started 19 years ago when I was just two years old. My twin brothers were born 5 short days after my second birthday and I knew from that moment they were the best gift a girl could ever ask for. My sister was 4 years old at the time, which meant two new additions to the family equaled double the mess, double the crying, and double the work. However, from the day the boys were brought home from the hospital I wanted nothing more than to take care of them and make sure they were happy at all times. The quality I possessed at such a young age was a genetic one passed down from my Moms side of the family, a quality that wanted nothing more than to take care of people.
As I grew older, the quality I had at such a young age further developed as environmental factors began to play a role. My neighbors across the street had three young girls and by the time I was a pre-teen in middle school I would go over and help the mom with the kids while she tried to get work done around the house. By the time I was a teenager in high school, I was a regular babysitter for them who babysat three times a week. I watched the girls grow up and start elementary school and felt I could play a crucial role in their social and intellectual development. By the time I could drive, the parents I babysat for started becoming distant at home and before long they were constantly away on business trips and the all responsibilities of the children fell on me. At the age of 17, I was responsible for getting the children off the bus, picking them up from after school extra help, making lunch, reviewing study material for tests, and ensuring all homework was done before they went to bed. When all the homework for the day was complete, I had to sign each of the girls’ assignment pads which indicated to the teacher that I confirmed all homework was taken care of.
