Abstract
This author conducted an investigation to develop an understanding of the role that recreation and leisure play in the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, on the individuals and caregivers that work or live with the disease, and to determine desired outcomes in the communities, healthcare systems, and support systems for which both groups rely on. The topic was selected because this author has several members of his family who have been diagnosed and/or are at risk of developing the disease, and has seen firsthand its destructive force upon families, caregivers, and individuals with the disease. Research was conducted by a review of scholarly journals containing relevant articles. In addition data was obtained from the National Institutes of Health (NHI) website.

Statement of the Problem
The National Institute of health has estimated that between 2.4 and 4.5 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s disease. The likelihood of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease increases with age. If current trends continue the number of American’s who will turn 65 are expected to double from 36 million in 2003 to 72 million in 2030 (NIH, 2009). This is important due to the fact the likelihood for diagnoses increases every 5 years after 65 (NIH, 2009). Currently there is no therapy or cure for Alzheimer’s, causing strain on families, caregivers and the medical system as a whole. It has been discovered however, that the possibility of contracting Alzheimer’s goes down considerably with social engagement and participation in recreational activities (Paradise, 2009)....
