Race Is

In America today, race is a huge factor. Within the past month, the people of the United States have voted a black president into office. This is historical in the idea that there has never been a black president elected to office in the 150 years that slavery has ended and blacks are to be treated as equals. His name is Barack Obama and he has a unique characteristic that most black people do not have however. Barack’s mother is a white woman from Kansas and his father is a black man from Kenya. Barack is the son of an interracial marriage. Interracial marriages are becoming more common in today’s society. The idea of a black person and white person being in a relationship was unheard of as little as forty years ago. If the world were perfect, race would not matter. A black person and a white person together would be acceptable to everyone. The distinction between black and white people has in some ways destroyed the past of our country but the unity of the two races can strive and together bring the United States to another step in being an example for the rest of the world to follow.
In the past and in some occurrences today, the people of the black race have been considered inferior to people of the white race. Up until the end of the American Civil War in 1861, slavery of black people was a common practice by many white people. To rich, white southerners, owning a slave was a high commodity, paying on average $25,000 in today’s terms. Throughout history, until recent time, black people have been looked down upon, harassed, abused, and wrongly treated. The thought of a black person who until recently, had been neglected so badly could be in a relationship with a white person who has historically been a step above all black people is eye-opening.
