The Mistaken Identity by Mark Twain
The structured in line composition. Each event is followed by the other one. Of course, there’s a foreshadowing in the title. It prepares the reader for what is to follow, e.g. there’s a person in the story and his personality will be mistaken and that there can be misunderstanding closely connected with this mistake. So this foreshadowing hints at the outcome of the event without revealing its cause and in this way intensifies suspense. Retardation also plays a significant role there. This story is built round one major enigma: What caused the sudden change in the attitude towards the narrator and his companion? By holding back the fact that the narrator was taken for a general until the very end of the story M.Twain builds suspense which constantly mounts in the course of the story. So the surprise ending there is revealed there quite successfully.
So it’s time to make some conclusions. Despite the fact that the story has a trivial plot, it nevertheless catches readers’ attention firstly because of the title as mentioned above and because of presence of enigma there. SO I think this story is a good one to be filmed or for putting on the stage. Also the author there shows us his hatred of hypocrisy and oppression. Such qualities cause the protest in an author.
