In the book Raw by Scott Monk shows the personal experience of a young offender over a short time frame. Monk was born in Mackville, NSW, in 1974 and grew up in Sydney. He published his first book when he was 19. Now Monk lives in Adelaide and works as a journalist. He was heavily influence by two American books, the outsider by SE Hinton and the book Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book Raw is told through third person which gives it a neutral perspective. Monk has written three books, “Boys are us”, “Raw” and “Crush”. He is passionate about writing stories on troubled kids. When Monk was at school he hated English. He keeps his books simple and writes what he knows and this shows by the way he connects with the readers of his books.

In the prologue Brett refers to the police as “Pigs”. This is derogatory language and shows Brett lack of respect for the police. He runs away from them when they try to capture him when he broke into the bottle shop “… He ran east thinking it was safe… Headlights snared Brett… The patrol car skidded into the laneway wild and mean.” In this quote Monk uses the derogatory language and personification of the police car to emphasis there detest of criminals and this shows Brett’s determination to continue protesting against the institution of the law enforcement- police. This is evidence that Brett regularly protests against the institution that upholds the laws in society. Monk uses Slang as a language technique throughout the book. Brett especially uses this language calling the police “pigs, cops and bucks”. This explores significant social issues relating to juvenile delinquency, law enforcement and punishment. Monk also uses the weather as a metaphor, for the main characters emotion. The weather mirrors the emotion of the character this is a Shakespearian technique. “The storm broke in early the next morning.
