This movie is a narration of the main character Zhao’s journey of taking his friend Liu’s dead body back home to Chonqing and the life stories of may ordinary people in China. Most characters in the movie may be nobodies, but their stories are the reflection of life of many Chinese people. There are a lot of nice people Zhao met on his journey that had generously gave him help, reflecting the virtue deeply rooted in many Chinese people. The movie also shows the importance of families as one of the most important themes of the movie.
Zhao had met so many kind and generous people on his journey that gave him aid. First, a young truck driver who refused to help him in the beginning offered to give him a ride after he lost his money. We can see the kindness inside the young driver’s heart. Second, Zhao met an old lonely man who held a funeral for himself. After finding out that Zhao was there just for a free meal, the old man was not angry, but kindly offered a way to preserve the dead body and gave him a handcart. Third, a beekeeper family brought him home for rest when they found him unconscious in the woods. They remind me of the Good Samaritan who took care of a stranger. There are many more kind people Zhao met—a young salon girl that helped Liu put makeup, a lonely middle-age woman that gave him some travel fare, a police that helped him deal with Liu’s dead body and helped him find Liu’s old home. All these kindhearted people show the nature of virtue inside many hearts of humankind.
There are many scenes that narrate the importance of families. First, an old man whose wife died early and had no children portrays someone that is lonely due to the lose of family. Second, the wife in the beekeeping family found the happiness again after an accident at work that caused disfigurement on her, because her husband and child showed love and support for her.
