Playing video games has become one of the most common leisure activities for people today. In 1995, Nintendo, one of the biggest names in the industry, sold its one billionth game. This started a revolution in the video game industry. Up until today, the graphics and realism of video games jkeep improving as competition in the industry fuel distributors to create better games with the help of new technologies. It has become a war of who can come up with the best games that people will want to play (Kooijmans, 2004). Given that video games just keep getting better, people invest more of their time and money on them. In 1999, thirteen people were killed in Columbine High School of Colorado by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The two boys took their own lives after committing the heinous crime. The Columbine Massacre instigated more research on the effects of video violence on people’s cognition and behavior due to the speculations that this act of extreme violence and aggression is correlated to the boys’ obsession with playing the video game DOOM (Fischer et al., 2007). Although DOOM is a shooting game, research should also be extended to the effects of racing games on aggression. In 2006, in Toronto, two street racers caused an accident which cost the life of a taxi driver. The game Need for Speed was found in one of the street racer’s car. A speculation was made that the street racer is a regular player of the game and his risk-taking could be related to it. In an in-dept study done by interviewing underground street racers, it was verified that playing racing games is really part of their culture. Aside from events mentioned, another reason why research should be extended to studying the relation of playing racing games and aggression is that racing games have been top selling computer games since 2006.
