Ian Humiston 1/24/09 Cooking For Wellness CFW Journal Article Red Meat Linked to Metabolic Syndrome Three points that caught my attention are one; the study says eating too much red meat can increase your chance of getting conditions that lead to heart disease and diabetes. Also, researchers found eating two servings of meat per day, such as burger patties, increased the risk of metabolic syndrome by 26 percent. Not only meat but fried food led to a 25 percent greater risk, and diet soda increased the risk by 34 percent. The aspect in this article that relates to my life is the fact that my diet consists of red meat, and I tend to eat red meat 10-15 times a month. Because of this study and the statistics it has given, I feel I should cut down on my red meat consumption to keep me from getting diabetes. I would like to ask the author what was the physical and mental shape of the test subjects to cause an increase from 25-34%? To me this plays a key role in how one digests and uses the nutrients that red meat gives. If one’s body is “un-fit” then large amounts of red meat could possibly have negative effects. I feel that this information should be shared with everyone, but regardless of its gruesome specs it should not be looked at as “ABSOLUTE.” A person’s physical and mental health greatly affects how your body uses nutrients. http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/dailydose/11/25/meat.metabolic.syndrome/index.html
