Religion in School

Education plays a big role in young minds, their life choices, and future. It is the teacher’s responsibility to instil correct information on each subject to challenge the minds. In a home it is the parent’s responsibility to show their child values, respect, morals, and personal religion beliefs. There are many opinions and believes to accommodate every individual in school without offending one. The First amendment of the United States Constitution is in place for the people and states that the government has no right in creating laws against religions as well as giving the people the freedom in choosing their own religion. According to Benedict, M., (2006) “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” The Establishment Clause prohibits the government from developing a religion or placing one religion over another. In the case of Edward v. Aguillard, the “Creationism Act” does not allow education on the evolution theory in public schools unless accompanied by the “creation science” in Louisiana (Supreme Court, 1986). It was found by the Supreme Court that this act was unconstitutional by violating the Establishment Clause. If the “Creationist Act” would have been allowed, the chance of steering youth in different beliefs and prohibiting them from making their own decision would have been a violation of the First Amendment.
The outcome would not change if the Intelligent Design would be taught. According to the IDEA Center (2004) Intelligent Design, “Is a scientific theory which holds that certain features of the universe and living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, and are not the result of an undirected, chance-based process such as Darwinian evolution.” The Intelligent design theory does not specify what intelligent designer or creator is involved.
