Brief Introduction of the Student
Fang Zhi is a 5 years old boy .He was born in China after 40 weeks gestation via caesarean section. His parents moved to Singapore from China when he was 2 years old; however he was only brought to Singapore when he was 4 years old. His main care giver in China was his paternal grandmother who took care of him since birth. His paternal grandmother communicates with him in mandarin. Paternal grandmother was the one who realized that Fang Zhi’ s language, social skills and behaviour was very different from other children .
A formal assessment was conducted for Fang Zhi at KKH, and the medical professionals team detected that he has Autism and EIPIC program was recommended .Based on his medical file, Fang Zhi has impairments in communication and social interaction, and has restricted, repetitive, and stereotypic patterns of behaviour, interests, and activities. According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) autism is a complex neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain.
Currently he lives with his parents in an HDB 3 room flat. Fang Zhi is receiving intensive, small group EIPIC intervention 2 days per week, for 3.0 hours per session .As both his parents are working; Fang Zhi is placed in whole day childcare from 7am to 7pm. The childcare has no intact program for children with disability or learning delayed needs. His peers are all typical students. However the school staff is willing to play a part in Fang Zhi’s learning and appears to be committed to his success. Even though his parents are very busy, however they are very committed to his needs, they are very supportive of Fang Zhi and is willing to try all approaches and strategies taught by the teachers and implement it at home so that it will be...
