Biofeedback within psychology is a younger field of study, but it has already provided psychology with many developments that help advance the human mind and body. In today’s world biofeedback has become extremely useful in aiding the human race with stress management and problems that are associated with stress. Problems like anxiety disorders, attention deficit and hyperactivity, cerebral palsy, chronic pain, enuresis, epilepsy,
10 essential hypertension, headache (migraine, mixed and tension types), incontinence (fecal and urinary), insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, motion sickness, myofascial pain syndrome, neuromuscular disorders, rectal pain and rectal ulcer, Raynaud's disease, rheumatoid arthritis pain, stroke, and TMJ disorders. All can be efficiently and positively affected according to the AAPB (Moss 10). It is important that a field of psychology focus on these issues because of the stress levels that increases in the daily lives of people due to the environment. Hans Selye’s research has explained the adverse affects of modern humans where the symptoms of fight or flight responses are continuously being activated, but not for the correct reasons leading to major health issues (Moss 7). There is no doubt that this is true and is clearly seen in the health of many humans today. With biofeedback people can learn how to manage their bodies and minds in order to control the bodies reaction instead of being a bystander. While biofeedback can help get rid of negative health, I agree with Rob Kall who states that, “the vision of biofeedback involves recreating wholeness, balance and health, rather than merely eliminating symptoms”, which is why the field should stray away form becoming a medical health profession (Moss 11). It is highlighted that biofeedback is more than a solution to human health, but a way for people to become their highest physical and mental being.
