Cosmetic surgery is a surgical procedure that changes a person’s physical features and appearance. These procedures are widely used in today’s society. Four cosmetic procedures that are among the most popular include Augmentation Mamaplasty, Rhinoplasty, Lipoplasty, and Abdominoplasty. These procedures involve the reconstruction of a person’s physical features such as, the nose, abdomen, or breast. Like any surgery, these procedures come with their own risks and side effects. Although not all people experience side effects, cosmetic surgery can cause problems such as, infections and life-threatening complications.
The first most popular cosmetic surgery is Augmentation Mamaplasty, better known as breast augmentation. It is a cosmetic procedure performed to reshape a man or woman’s breast. Although more popular in women, some men have this procedure performed as well. There are two types of breast augmentation; breast implants and breast lifts. In certain circumstances these two procedures may be performed in conjunction with one another. When receiving breast implants “there are currently two main options – silicone breast implants and saline (salt water) breast implants.” (Ceatus Media Group LLC, 2010). Breast implant surgery has its positive and negative effects. Positive effects associated with breast implant surgery include building one’s self-esteem and “improving the appearance of breasts that show signs of aging or changes after child bearing.” (Ceatus Media Group LLC). There are also negative effects to breast implant surgery, some minor and some more serious in nature. Some of the minor side effects range from complications with breast feeding to “loss of sensation in the nipple and breast area.” (Ceatus Media Group LLC, 2010).
