Robots Are Not Conscious
Summary
Due to the rapid and continuous technological advancements, human beings were able to create a wide array of inventions that will render convenience and make our lives far easier than before. Robots are considered as one of the greatest inventions of humans. Inventors attempt to create robots that almost resemble all human functions. However, there is one thing that cannot be copied by robots; the acquisition of consciousness. Robots do not have the natural consciousness like humans and robots cannot parallel the consciousness of humans. There are a lot of hindrances and limitations on the acquisition of consciousness in robots as advanced science and technology does not developed this particular aspect of robots greatly. Moreover, putting or programming consciousness in robots may have some negative consequences.
Consciousness is one of the innate qualities of humans. Consciousness is the ability to have thoughts about one’s thoughts. There are several aspects of consciousness. These include awake, self-aware, self-knowledge, introspection, and internal monologue. Consciousness can also be phenomenological or access. Phenomenological consciousness refers to the ability to sense the environment, whereas access consciousness is having some “thought” about something. This thought can be referred to in other thoughts.
Scientist long investigated the nature of consciousness, which is one of the intriguing characteristics of humans. Scientists studied consciousness and how can it be applied to robots to fully copy a wide array of functions of humans. Thus, five axioms were developed that robots must fulfill in order to accomplish the level of consciousness of humans.
