Someone who I would consider to have a great positive impact on society would be Angelina Jolie. Angelina has been involved in a lot of humanitarian causes throughout most of her recent career. She started off by shadowing her father Jon Voight as her acting career developed. She has also had modeling jobs and been cited as one of the world’s most beautiful women.
Angelina Jolie first became involved in community service during her filming of “Tomb Raider” while in Cambodia. While there, she visited many refugee camps and learned about the conditions there. A few months after her initial visit, she returned to Cambodia for a few weeks where she met with Afghan refugees from Pakistan and donated $1 million in response to an international United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) emergency appeal. On August 27, 2001 the UNHCR named Angelina a Goodwill Ambassador. During this conference she said “we cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering. I honestly want to help. I don't believe I feel differently from other people. I think we all want justice and equality, a chance for a life with meaning. All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us.” (UNHCR)
In 2002, Angelina visited a refugee camp in Thailand and also went to visit Colombian refugees in Ecuador. While in Cambodia she adopted her first son, Maddox from a local orphanage in Battambang. She also made trips to Kosovo and Kenya to see other refugees. While filming “Beyond Borders” she met with Angolan refugees in Namibia. In 2003, Angelina went on a trip to Tanzania for nearly a week. While there she traveled to western border camps to meet with Congolese refugees and later paid a visit to Sri Lanka. After this she went to Russia for four days as she traveled to North Caucasus.
