Romeo and Juliet - Lust vs Love


Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers in the English language. His written play, Romeo and Juliet became one of the most well known plays all over the world. The play takes place in the beautiful city, Verona. About two star-crossed lovers from separate families that turn out to be enemies, making it hard for the lovers to love openly and thus, they took their lives for the other, hence settling their quarrelling families. In Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet, the idea of real love has been mistaken for infatuation. In the play Romeo and Juliet, their love seems to be infatuation rather than real love as the both star-crossed lovers lusted each other physically than spiritually, by idolizing the other and by performing the act of betrayal for each other. This makes Romeo and Juliet’s so called “love” an infatuation rather than true love.

Throughout the play, we can notice that Romeo and Juliet lust each other physically than spiritually. Already in the beginning of the story, we can see that Romeo is a hopeless romantic and is distracted by the idea of love. Romeo fell in love with a girl called Rosaline and her rejection towards him brought him deep grief and misery. Romeo told Benvolio, “Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes; Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears. What is it else? A madness most discreet, A choking gall, and a preserving sweet.” (1.1.184-188). Romeos description of love is its insanity and is the cause to oceans of tears. Later on Romeo hopes to find someone with the same amount of beauty as Rosaline to help him forget about his deep wounds made by Rosaline. Romeo is also blinded by the idea that beauty is love. Romeo tells Benvolio after, “'Tis the way To call hers exquisite, in question more. These happy masks that kiss fair ladies' brows, Being black, puts us in mind they hide the fair. He that is strucken blind cannot forget The precious treasure of his eyesight lost....
