Romeo and Juliet

At the beginning of the play, Samson and Gregory (Capulets) are walking in the market and a fight breaks out between then and some Montagues. Benvolio tries to stop the fighting by saying that the Prince has forbidden any more brawls. Tybalt arrives and the fighting worsens. The Prince arrives and calls all those who are fighting “enemies of the peace”. He says that anyone caught breaking the peace again will pay with their lives and will be put to death.

Benvolio meets Romeo who is feeling love-sick for Rosalind. As they speak, they see the wounded being carried home after the fight and Romeo says “here’s much do with hate”

Lord Capulet and Paris talk about the possibility of Paris marrying Juliet. She is not yet 14 years old. The Capulet household is preparing for a great party. Lady Capulet talks with Juliet and her Nurse about marriage. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that Paris has asked for her hand in marriage. Juliet says that she will look and see what she thinks of him at the party.

Mercutio, Romeos best friend, has managed to get on the guest list of the Capulet party. Romeo is excited because Rosalind will be there. At the party, Romeo sees Rosalind and admires her beauty. He then sees Juliet and falls in love instantly. They meet and kiss. Juliet is amazed by the bold stranger and she returns his feelings. She sends her nurse to find out who Romeo is and discovers that he’s a Montague. She is upset by this and says “my only love has sprung from my only hate.”

Romeo climbs into the Capulet garden and sees Juliet on her balcony. He hears her talking about him and he thinks she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Romeo is hidden from Juliet as she stands and speaks on her balcony. He compares her beauty to the sun, stars and heavens. He is at great risk in Capulet’s garden because he is trespassing.
