Romeo & Juliet Character Comparison

Romeo & Juliet Character Comparison

Romeo and Mercutio are close friends and alike in a few ways, however they are also very different, at times they can seem almost completely opposite, that is why they are foil characters. In Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Mercutio are best friends, they often disagree on things but still remain close. They help each other through tough situations in their own different way. Romeo and Mercutio have different views on love and life. Romeo is calm were Mercutio rushes into fights, where Romeo rushes into love, however they can both act immature at times and act silly together.
Romeo and Mercutio have extremely different views on love. In Act 2 Scene 4 while waiting for Romeo Mercutio complains to Benvolio, “Alas, poor Romeo! He is already dead, stabbed with a white wench’s black eye, shot through the ear with a love song…” Mercutio clearly doesn’t approve of Romeo’s dramatic actions, he thinks that he is being a wimp and over reacting. Mercutio probably thinks this because of Romeo’s dramatic displays like in Act 1 Scene 4 where he tells Mercutio “Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes with nimble soles. I have a soul of lead so stakes me to the ground I cannot move.” This shows how serious Romeo is about love. His actions tend to bother Mercutio but they remain friends anyway. Their views are clearly opposite; Romeo is dramatic and much more serious about it whereas Mercutio is completely uninterested in ‘true love’.
Romeo and Mercutio both tend to rush into things although those things tend to be very different Mercutio rushes into fights and situations that will cause him to be the center of attention where Romeo rushes into love. This shows how they are similar but also different, they are both immature in this way but express that immaturity in opposite ways.
