In all honesty, I chose Walt Whitmans Song of Myself because my Father enjoyed his work. My Father lost his courageous battle with cancertwo years ago and I find ways ofconnecting with him wherever I can.I understand that his poems are very long and I have no experience in this department but, it gave me drive. It helped me focus on a subject that is so very new to me. I learned something about myself while reading this. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to venture where he ventured... thank you for allowing me to do so. To most people, Walt Whitmans Song of Myself changed the course of poetry in the 19th century. It introduced free verse to a community that may not have been ready to accept it. Obviously, time has proved otherwise. Its journey paved the wayfor the poet as he loafs his way across his physical and spiritual existence, proving that his body is equally as important as his soul. Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819 on Long Island, NY. At the beginning of his career he worked as a journalist and at a printing shop. At the time of his publication in 1855, the 36 year old poet brought Leaves of Grass door to door, even going as far as sending Ralph Waldo Emerson a copy, who responded with a letter that Whitman included in his second edition. The theme of the poem did not join along with the romantic verbiage of the 19th Century, and his tone was the biggest obstacle for the readers. The greatest challenge for Whitman was to unite his vision with a suitable form. His willingness to break from the norm paved the way for a new type of poetry, and that is prominent to this day.He has opened many avenues and possibilities for many poets. He was deemed the Father of Modern poetry. Song of Myself almost boasts about the connections between the people and objects of the world.
