Statement of the Issue
Sick Leave
The statement issue is inadequate amount of sick and vacation time accrual. Employees working 20 hours per week or more accrue vacation hours beginning the first day of employment up to 40 hours yearly. If an employee work more than 20 hours in any week the sick leave begin accruing the first day of employment up to 40 hours a year. Safe Credit Union has a policy that the sick leave will cap at 240 hours and stop accruing until the sick leave bank is used and under 240 hours. (P. Batty, personal communication, July 20, 2013).
When speaking with employees employed by SAFE Credit Union, they are very appreciative for the employer paid sick leave, but they are complaining because of the way the policy is enforced. It is not to the employees benefit if they are critically ill. When interviewing the employees, they pointed out that their sick leave, benefits the employees as long as they stay healthy, or they do not deplete their sick leave bank. They further stated when an employee is out on sick leave for one day or more than one day; employees stop accruing sick leave until they return back to work to their original assigned position with the original amount of assigned hours per week. Doing the interview, more than half of the employees that were interviewed voiced their concern; if they ever had to use their full accrued sick leave bank they would be out on Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) without pay. (personal communication, July 21, 2013)
Another reason why the employees would be off work without pay is because Safe does not permit employees to use vacation in lieu of sick leave. According to Safe’s Human Resource personnel the employee’s vacation time is to be used for rest and relaxation. Human Resource personnel further states, when employees are tired and fatigue that could be reason for low morale, non-performance, and low productivity (personal communication, July 21, 2013).
