Same-sex marriage is one of the most controversial topics in today’s society. In some states it is illegal for two people of the same gender to come together in marriage. America is supposedly a land built on freedom, but there is nothing free about being denied marriage here in Pennsylvania because of gender. You need to think about what is fair and right before you continue to reject passing the same-sex marriage law. Pennsylvania needs to legalize same-sex marriage.
After New Jersey just recently declared same-sex marriage legal, it leaves Pennsylvania as the lone northeastern state not allowing same-sex marriage. Fifteen states allow same-sex marriage in whole as well as many other states on the cusp or in transition to allowing it. In addition to them, there are eight states that allow for civil unions between same-sex couples. Many other states are progressing and yet Pennsylvania remains stagnant. Pennsylvania sits on these old customs that are outdated and remain ignorant to the idea of evolution.
Not allowing same-sex marriage leaves many gay and lesbian Americans incapable of attaining the benefits that they can get through marriage. Marriage involves many benefits that are restricted to people who cannot marry because of same-sex marriage laws. People that are brought together by marriage get reduced taxes. They also have virtually no taxes on inheritance whereas if two people were unmarried and one left their money to the other, that person would be buried in taxes.
Same-sex marriage is a problem that is close to home as well. My cousin is lesbian and cannot be brought together by holy matrimony here. She had to leave Pennsylvania, her home, just so that she could legally be with the one she loves. One out of every ten people in the United States is gay or lesbian. That means the same problem my cousin and our family faces everyday happens all over the country.
