Political Satire used in late night comedy: Katt Williams’ Date a President Comedians like Jay Leno and David Letterman have been making jokes about elections for many years now. “We’ve just been through Bush and Clinton, that’s kind of the golden age for comedy.” (Carter) With targets as easy as these and the way our country is looking we might as well joke about it, if we can’t fix it! This recent election has been one of the most popularto criticize. Michele Ganeless, president of Comedy Central stated, “More young people have been into this election, I think we’re proving it.” We have come to the conclusion that it is ok to joke on president officials, but who authorizes the right to freely talk about their personal lives, and allow the line to be crossed? Mark Russell, a political humorist for 40 plus years says,“Times have changed. It used to be considered brash to poke fun at the president. It’s gone from brash to sledgehammer.” (Carter) The once joking matter that probably eased the tension during elections now is a growing concern to the threatening and obnoxious statements made against these officials. Katt Williams a stand up satire comic African American who has created a name for himself in the comedy world, “had little trouble finding humor in the election cycle“(Riemink) in his Pimpin' Pimpin' tour, he came up with an act, Date a President, focusing on the “white people do this/Black people do this approach”. (Williams) Hecreatively made it his own while ranting at what a confusing time it is during this whole presidential election. He joked that “this election might be happening too fast after eight years of Bush. We just got out of a fucked up relationship. Maybe as a country we should be single for a while, Date a President, see how that works out for a couple of months.” (Williams) As his hip hop vibe and feelings about the candidates goes on, he understands that it’s easy to be influenced by campaigns.
