School Bullying: What Should Parents Do?

Getting your son to school is a hassle every single morning. It takes forever to get him out of bed, dressed, and fed in order to get him to the bus stop on time. You think he is just a typical teenager that just hates school and is embarrassed taking the bus. But you have also noticed a change in his personality. He seems quieter, not eating normally, and his grades have been slipping. You have tried to talking to him about what is going on with him but he remains silent. After many failed attempts, you go to your son’s school to ask the administration if they have noticed anything abnormal and what could be the possible reasons for his recent behavior. One teacher mentions that there are a group of teens that tend to tease him in class, but there is not any harm in it. As a parent, you become infuriated that the administration thinks this is proper protocol for dealing with bullying. As a parent, what should you do?
In the recent years, bullying has become a very prominent discussion among schools and college campuses. “Almost 30 percent of teens in the United States (or over 5.7 million) are estimated to be involved in school bullying as either a bully, a target of teen bullying, or both” (School Bullying and). There have been reports of students who have committed suicide because they can no longer deal with being teased, embarrassed, or hurt. This is a very serious problem that has to be dealt with carefully. First, there are a few facts about bullying that you should know. What is bullying? Bullying involves more than just physical attacks. Bullying occurs when a person or “group of people repeatedly trying to harm someone who is weaker or more vulnerable” (School bullying and). Bullying can include direct physical attacks, teasing, name calling, cyber-bullying, making sexually suggestive remarks, or damaging personal property.
