Week Three begins today. In Week Three, we will focus on the relationship between perception and interpersonal communication. This topic is interesting and relevant in our multi-cultural society. As we know, when we communicate with people from other cultures, our perceptions and ways of viewing our world and situations must be taken into consideration. Our words, nonverbal gestures and habits can be misinterpreted or misunderstood due to differences in perception and background. So, we should work to understand how perceptions can differ and how they relate.

So, after completing this unit, you will:

Explain the concept of perception as a process
Identify the influences on perception
Explain how self-concept and perception impact interpersonal communication
This week on the Discussion Board, you will discuss an example of a time when one of the six influences on perception (starting on page 72) caused you to misperceive someone or something in a work situation. What could you have done differently? You will also discuss a time when you were misperceived by someone else and why you believe this happened. Please be sure to include terms from the readings in your response.

In addition to our discussions, you will complete a project and participate in seminar on Thursday at 7:00 PM, ET. The project involves writing about an interpersonal situation and how self-concept and perception impacted this interpersonal communication. You will watch a short video (posted in class) and respond to questions. As always, more detailed instructions are posted in class under Week Four’s link.

You will also complete a brief practice quiz and quiz this week.

If you have any questions about the course or the project for Week Three, please don’t hesitate to ask me. I am here to help. I would like to commend all of you for working hard in the course and participating well. The time we have spent together so far has been very productive and fun as well....
