I chose Selena Quintanilla – Perez. I chose her because she was my idol when I was little. I think that she has accomplished a lot and that she should be remembered forever for what she has done. She started singing when she was only six years old. Her dad started a band of Selena, her brother Abe III, and her sister Suzette when Selena was nine years old. They sang at their family restaurant, Papa Gayo’s. After awhile the restaurant wasn’t doing so well so they had to sell their house. They started performing wherever and whenever they got the chance to. When Selena was fourteen she recorded her first album. In 1987 at the Tejano Music Awards Selena received the award for Best Female Vocalist and continued to receive it for seven more years. In 1989 Selena was signed by Jose Behar of Capital/EMI. In 1990, an album called, Ven Conmigo, was released. They met a lady named Yolanda Saldivar who said she wanted to start a fan club. Yolanda became the fan club’s president and the manager clothing boutiques by Selena. Selena married Chris Perez on April 2, 1992. In her lifetime Selena released fourteen albums and received numerous awards. To have so many awards and honors is just absolutely amazing.
In 1995, it was discovered that Selena’s fan club president, Yolanda, was stealing money from the fan club. Selena went to Yolanda’s hotel to recover missing paper work for the taxes but Yolanda said she was raped in Mexico, but she was lying. Selena went back to the hotel to get the papers but Yolanda still wouldn’t give them to her. Selena turned to leave, and Yolanda pulled out a gun from her purse and shot Selena in the back. Selena ran to the lobby and the clerk dialed 911. Selena died at the hospital from loss of blood. Later that summer, her album Dreaming of you was number one on the United States Billboards.
