Emotional intelligence is how well we handle ourselves and our relationships. It includes the four domains and helps people understand what they are feeling and why they are feeling that way and ways to control the emotions. Daniel Goleman describes his four domains of emotional intelligence to be: perceiving emotion, using emotions to facilitate thought, understanding emotions, and managing emotions. Perceiving emotions is a non-verbal reception and expression of emotion (http://www.unh.edu/emotional_intelligence/ei%20What%20is%20EI/ei%20fourbranch.htm). Emotional expression is a form of social communication and includes the emotion of happiness, sadness, anger, and fear. Perceiving emotion is when you can see the emotion on another persons face or hear the emotion in their voice. Using emotions to facilitate thought is where the emotions promote thinking. For example if a person has the emotion of anger or sadness that person will start to have angry thoughts or thoughts of sadness. The same can be said about happiness and excitement. When it comes to Understanding Emotions one must understand that emotions convey messages. For example when a person is happy that person will display a message that they are happy such as socializing or walking around with bounce in their step. If the person is angry they may pace the floor, or even want to seek revenge for feeling like they were treated unfairly. Last is Managing Emotions. When a person is able to manage their emotions they are able to control how they react to situations. For example if a person is angry they can manage the emotion of anger and not react angrily to a situation or avoid expressing anger which includes facial expressions as well.
