Right now millions of students in 50 states are sitting through and Abstinence-Only sex education class, but are not retaining any important information they should know before engaging in sexual activity. Since 1997, U.S. Congress has spent over half a billion dollars, to provide the Abstinence-Only sex education program to schools, without looking at the results it has had on the teenage population in those schools. If the government would look at the results of the Abstinence-Only program, before spending that money, they would see that it is not having any affect on the students it is being taught to. Meanwhile, schools that have the conventional form of Sex Education classes are seeing greater results with their students, than those in Abstinence-Only sex education. The Abstinence-Only Sex Education program is not doing its job properly, and it is wasting millions of America’s tax dollars, therefore, schools across the U.S should withdraw from the Abstinence-Only form of education, to the conventional form of sex education which had had much greater results.
One of the main flaws of Abstinence-Only education is its inability to inform its student about the consequences of being sexually active, and how to have sex safely. With schools switching to this form of sex education, many health books are being censored and important chapters about STI’s, Aid’s, and teen pregnancy are being cut out because schools and some parents think that are inappropriate for high school students. When this happens, it is actually impairing the students because they lack important information they need to know before having sex. Teachers who have seen how this hurts the students and have tried to educate their students more about the dangers of having sex have been faced with lawsuits, and then were faced with extreme lawsuits.
