According to the Webster’s Dictionary, sexuality means “the quality or state of being sexual, the condition of having sex”. The term “sexuality” is implied in every aspect of our society. Sexuality can also be reflected in many of our actions that we take in our daily life. In fact sexuality affects in every conversation we have, as in the way we talk, react, and understand. Sexuality is a topic that some can find controversial as others can find it amazing. In this following essay we will analyze the story “we have no right to happiness”, the poem “to my coy mistress”, and the play Trifles, to see how sexuality is seen in each one of them, and we will compare and contrast it to see how many views of sexuality we can found.
In the first piece of literature, “we have no right to happiness”, sexuality is the main topic of a conversation that two persons are having. The discussion is about these two couples that broke their relationship just for sexual issues. Couple A broke up because Mrs. A lost her looks and her liveliness during the time she took care of Mr. A when he was sick. This provoked Mr. A to get a new couple who had the looks and could make him happy. Couple B broke up because when Mr. A came from the war he was smashed up and lost his virility and his job, so Mrs. B left him to look for her happiness. Mr. A and Mrs. B finished up together and both could find their happiness. But really, what do we defined by happiness? The discussion began because some woman named Claire said that “after all, they had a right to happiness”. The discussion finished that there is no such thing as a right to happiness because there can not be a right that hurts someone else happiness. In this story we can see two point of views of sexuality, one is the view of the couples, and the other the one of the people discussing.
