Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia, which is now Czech Republic. (about.com) Freud’s father was married 3 times, Freud being the first child of the third marriage. Freud’s mother, Amalia Nathanson, married Jacob Freud when she nineteen years old and he was thirty-nine. Freud had two step-brothers the same age as his mother, the closest child in age to Freud was his nephew. After Sigmund, Amalia had seven more children, Sigmund always being her favorite. When Freud was four years old his family moved to Vienna, the now capital of Austria. (about.com) Sigmund Freud was Jewish however his early child years were spent as an outsider in a Catholic community. Soon after they moved to Vienna Emperor Francis Joseph had liberated the Jews of Austria, giving the Jews equal rights and permission to settle anywhere in the empire. (Stephen P. Thornton) This gave the Jews a higher standard of living and better educational and professional opportunities. Freud lived in an area filled with other Jewish families, it was known as the Leopoldstadt slum. By the time Freud was ten years he had five sisters and one brother.
In 1873, Freud enrolled in medical school. Vienna was very popular in the medicine field. Freud was first attracted to the laboratory and the scientific side of medicine more than the clinical practice. He spent seven years, instead of five, to fully complete his doctorate, which he received at the age of twenty-four. He met and fell in love with Martha Bernays, two months after two were engaged. They were separated for most of his engagement and finally had the wedding in 1887, they had six children. (about.com)
Freud spent three years as an on duty physician at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus, a general hospital in the center of Vienna. (Stephen P.
