Physical education is not being getting the respect it should. Many school districts across the nation have very low physical education standards, if any at all. Physical education is not a required course in many schools and so children, as well as teenagers, aren’t getting the quality PE they should be receiving. Indeed, this is a serious problem. It is is resulting in obesity as well as other health issues. These problems will continue to affect individuals in the US, unless something is done about it.
In 2012, 29% of high school students had participated in at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity on all 7 days, and only 31% attended physical education class daily, according to a survey conducted by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This statistic is alarming! According to this, only 1/3 of the high school student population is actually receiving the bare minimum amount of physical education in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In fact, even recess is not a requirement among elementary schools across the country, it is being cut back on. The very little play time (exercise time) that was given to young children is being taken away. Mandatory physical education should also be taught to younger children at elementary level so that exercise becomes a healthy habit for everyone. This lack of physical activity in schools is occurring because of several factors. One of them is that schools give priority more to academic subjects such as english and math because those are the subjects which students are tested on every year, and therefore, they are prioritized by teachers, schools, and whole districts. They didn't believe PE was important enough to become a core subject.
