British Culture and its Relation to the US
There are many similarities and relations between the United States and Britain, as well as a few differences. These can be analyzed through an examination of pop culture, literature, such as Mark Haddon’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”, and music, specifically The Beatles. Whether these elements of life are similar or different between the two nations, one can still learn a lot through the connections of the two places.
Pop culture in Britain is very similar to that of the United States. Both nations enjoy simply hanging out with friends have seen a growing party scene for teens, although it may be a bit more massive in Britain. This is evident in many articles. One said that British teenagers are the worst behaved in all of Europe and that 44% had been in a physical fight in the previous year, 38% had been involved in underage sex, and 27% have gotten drunk regularly. It also seems that British culture is more into high-fashion. One interesting and different thing about Britain includes some of the slang and vocabulary commonly used. Many people know how the words “bloody”, “bloody hell”, and “bloody-nora” are often used to express a negative feeling. Some other words include “bin” instead of trash-can,” knickers” rather than pants, “pissed” instead of drunk, while Americans use the word to mean angry, and the word “fit” the mean attractive, in the same way that Americans would say “hot”. Still, with these differences in culture, the British and Americans remain very similar. Something else that they have in common would be movies. The British Film Institute researched the 100 favorite British films of the 20th century and compiled a list of 100 movies that are considered “culturally British”. Many of these films were also very popular in the Unites States, such as “The Ladykillers” (#13), “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (#23), and “The Italian Job” (#36).
