On the 6th September 1781, the slave cog under the Name of the Zong set sail for the isle of Jamaica in the West Indies. They had arranged to dock on the 20th December 1781 on board were 440 black Africans branded slaves. Most were male the rest were women and children, the men were split from the women and children making distress and families were also split up, there was seventeen white slavers on board who had free “use” of the women, by raping them if they rebelled they were usually killed. The captain was a mister Collingwood, before they reached Jamaica they noticed all there slaves were riddled with disease and were thin, captain Collingwood spoke to his men and decided to through the slave overboard and head back to England and to claim, “they did not have enough water” despite having rained heavily the previous day refilling the water containers, but they still went ahead with the cold hearted murder, the court may not see this slaves as people but rather as goods but if you hurt them do they not cry?, if you pricked them with a dagger or knife will they not bleed? If you believe that slaves are people rather than goods you will side with me and lock this man and his crew into prison and take away all proceeds made from the fraud and corruption of them, and the insurance company should also be found guilty of insurance fraud although they were the one’s paying out, just for doing so they will be contributing towards the evil and greed of the slave trade.
