In the film Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, the main idea that love is able to conquer all obstacles put in front of it was worth learning about. Love’s conquering is shown through Jamal’s overcoming obstacles put in front of him – specifically his conflict with the game show host Prem and his upbringing. These obstacles are shown through the techniques of Cinematography, Dialogue and Flashback.



Love conquering all is a theme which is worth learning about and is common across many texts, specifically those which feature young love. Texts featuring this theme range from Shakespeare’s play of Romeo and Juliet to current popular music and the recent movie Slumdog Millionaire. The theme of love conquering all is universal – this is shown by the way it has traversed time and culture to still be a universal theme today. Shakespeare’s successful plays over 500 years ago were about the same theme, yet it still stands for all time and movies are still being made about it today. The theme of love conquering all is popular with audiences because the viewer knows what is going to happen and at the end when all is overcome they feel happy for the characters. The audience wants to see the lovers come together at the end – they want the characters to overcome all of the obstacles put in front of them and emerge triumphant conquerors.

In the film Slumdog Millionaire, Jamal must conquer a number of obstacles for his love for Latika to be able to come to fruition. Jamal must overcome his roots in the slum to be able to be with Latika, and when he gets an opportunity to do this (in the form of an invitation to the “Who wants to be a millionaire?” game show), he must overcome the obstacle that the show and its host, Prem, put between him and winning enough money to escape the slum with Latika. These two major obstacles which Jamal is up against and must overcome for his love to be able to succeed form the main plotline which the film follows....
