“Smell like a man, man.” Old Spice
The main objective of a company when producing a television advertisement is to get their merchandise to sell to the viewers. The audience being targeting are influenced by various methods that lure them into buying the product. I chose to do a rhetorical analysis on an Old Spice television advertisement. This major company for men’s hygienic products has built a line of men’s body wash that has a very amusing and appealing advertising campaign. Their ads, especially the one I chose, are designed to get recognition in the marketplace and to outdo other lines of men’s body wash. This advertisement I chose suggest that by using their product, a man will become similar to the one used in the commercial. In other words, it’ll turn the viewer that chooses to use it into the ultimate man. The Old Spice television advertisement was intended to reach out to the needs of women, lure in men by offering the perfect image of what a man should be and how he should smell, and designing a erotic idea that draws attention.
After watching this ad for the first time, I could right away tell that it was reaching out to the needs of women in various ways. I feel like today in our society, a clever and successful way of marketing a product intended for men is to have the ad appeal to women. “In fact, women account for $7 trillion in consumer and business spending in the United States, and over the next decade, they will control two thirds of consumer wealth. Women make or influence 85% of all purchasing decisions, and purchase over 50% of traditional male products.” (thenextweb.com) It’s obvious that women are doing most the spending now a day, and it’s imperative that companies reach out to them while trying to sell a product. Women have numerous thoughts on television ads that deal with men’s products. Why would they?
