Social change has been brought around many a times throughout history. Standards and expectations have been broken some for the better others for worse, but social changes occur consistently. Articles like “Social Progress and Social Problems: Toward a Sociology of Gloom,” by Joel Best demonstrate a less than positive view on how sociologist’s see the world and insists that there has been much progress but that it is eclipsed by a continues stream of articles that only exemplify negatives of society. Other articles such as “The McDonaldization of Society,” by George Ritzer show how society has become a larger size replica of what fast food restaurants such as McDonalds are, which is everything made and taken the easy way, and lastly Allen G. Johnson’s article “What We Can Do?: Becoming Part of the Solution,” which, much like its title implies tells us individually what we can do to improve our society even if only a little. Johnson’s article clarifies society’s change and what is to be expected within future years to come.
Since the beginning of the U.S. there have been many eras in which society has changed its views on worldly topics. The U.S. has undergone a lot of change, from new world colonials to hippies to world business leaders of today. Some may question whether all this change has resulted in a better or worse place to live in. With so many influences like the media the world has become much more globalized, leaving less room for distinction among cultures. It has become more of a mush and has lost uniqueness among nations, what could once be seen only in a specific part of the world is now around every corner of any big city. Take for example McDonalds, It is known almost everywhere around the world. It has become so standardized that wherever one is in the world the McDonalds will be the same as it is anywhere else.
