1. The feminist perspective of the family is moderately simple. They believe that women are being exploited and thus oppressed in the family life. These oppressions are brought fort through the different domestic work that is being done at home. The production of labour power is one of the important approaches from the feminist that is used to examine the domestic work. Margaret Benston (1972) says that there was a huge amount of women doing domestic work and were not paid for it. So therefore, the oppression is because of the man – that’s what the feminist believe. However, I think that this is so because in most societies women didn’t had the same chances as men. They couldn’t get the same jobs as men; so, they had to leave the men as the bread winners of the house. Another theory is that of ideological conditioning. Here, feminist says that the family has the responsibility to instil in their children’s mind a sense of ideology. Having the previous theory in mind, the woman would be the one staying at home doing domestic work. This means that it is the woman’s job to make the children learn how to go about in society. Although the woman is the one doing the ideological controlling, they will still be living in a patriarchal household. So it is still the man that comes up with how the children will be thought.
2. Over the past decades or so, society has been constantly changing and so doing also did the families change along with their society. During these changes, the family lost some of their functions. There was an advantage and a disadvantage of this situation. The disadvantage is that there was a lost of family functions, but on the contrary the family strengthens these functions that weren’t lost. An example of the family function that is lost would be that the family was responsible to cluster their children to learn the basic norms and values of society.
